Giving a pet a second chance at a good life is always a wonderful thing to do and when you take in a Shar Pei rescue dog you are doing a wonderful and humane thing.
It will take some time but after a while, when your Shar Pei rescue dog starts to feel comfortable in your home, the real personality of your dog will shine through and you will start to see the traits that make a Shar Pei so unique. But in the meantime there are things you can do, and behaviors you should watch for, while your dog is settling in.
Give your new Shar Pei rescue dog some space and let them look around their new home a little. The first thing you are going to want to make sure is that they know they are in a new home and not still in their abusive situation. Just let them see their new surroundings and take it all in.
When your Shar Pei rescue dog is getting adjusted to your home you need to reduce the commotion, noise, and sudden movements that are going on in the home to give the dog a chance to get used to your home. A Shar Pei does not like a lot of sudden movements and can get a little confused and even frustrated when there are a lot of things going on and a lot of activity coming at it. So for the benefit of your new dog you may want to keep the clatter down for a little while until the dog gets used to its new home and new family.
Never punish your dog. As you begin the process of training your dog to be part of your family the worst thing you can do is punish a Shar Pei. They are extremely intelligent and can take to training very well but after a while they can get bored so it is up to you to learn ways to keep your dog interested during training and never punish the dog for mistakes it makes. The dog will respond much better to positive reinforcement of the things it does well.
When the Shar Pei was first being bred in China it was bred as an aggressive but intelligent dog. Your Shar Pei rescue dog will more than likely have some of that aggression going on as defense mechanisms to what it has been through.
They are also very loyal dogs that become very attached to their family and if you show enough patience and love towards them then eventually they will drop the aggression and move to being the loyal family dog they really want to be.
Anything you try to teach a Shar Pei rescue dog will eventually sink in and the dog responds very well to training. But you need to exercise patience and have a little respect for what the dog has been through before you can really make your new dog the loyal family pet it wants to be.

Shar Peis are the really wrinkly dogs from China that were all the rage in the 1980’s. They’d been around for centuries in China, but the Western world didn’t get their own Shar Peis until then. It has been suspected that the Shar Peis that were sold to North Americans were of far inferior stock than their kin in China. The gene pool in North America is very small, so finding a healthy puppy is rare.
It’s the wrinkles that are the claim to fame for the Shar Pei. Unlike most other breeds of dog, this one is quite distinctive! The puppies are far more wrinkled than the adults. The Shar Pei breed standard calls for the adult to have loose skin, if not wrinkly skin, but wrinkles are still expected around the face. Because of the heavily wrinkled face, it is normal for these dogs to slobber a lot.
Only solid colored Shar Peis are permissible for showing in sanctioned American Kennel Club shows. But there are many part-colored and even spotted Shar Peis running about. Heads that look too big for the body are preferred, but it is common for Shar Peis to have heads in proportion to their large, blocky bodies. All Shar Pei information will tell you that they naturally come in three coat lengths, but for some reason only the two shortest coats are allowed.
Other ways Shar Peis can get disqualified from the show ring is by not having a solid colored coat. They often come in a brown and white coat that resembles an English Springer Spaniel’s. This is sometimes called a flowered Shar Pei among Shar Pei enthusiasts. Sometimes a small tuft of white is allowed on a show dog. If they have bear coats, in which the hairs are over one inch long, they will also be disqualified.
The breed standard for the Shar Pei is not conducive to everybody’s idea of a family pet. Their temperament is very much like a Rottweiler’s, only they are even more aggressive with other dogs. They usually are good with kids, but wary of adults. If you need a guard dog or a dog to round up livestock, they are ideal.
here are three kinds of coat lengths, only two of which are recognized by the American Kennel Club. These coats consist of the short “horse coat”, the longer “brush coat” and the very rare “bear coat”, which has hair longer than one inch.
Only solid colored coats are permissible by the American Kennel Club, which means there are a lot of parti-colored and flower colored pureblood Shar Peis in North America looking for homes.
They are solid and square dogs that are built a lot like Chow Chows. Their heads are usually large, but some average sized heads are permissible. Their chest is broad like a Rottweiler’s with the forelegs spread widely apart. Their tails curl over the back.

You have made a wonderful decision to give a Shar Pei rescue dog a second chance in life but there are some things about the Shar Pei that you need to know before you can successfully train a Shar Pei rescue dog.
Giving a pet a second chance is a great gesture and if you take your time and really give your dog a chance then you can expect many years of love and happiness with your new pet. Take some time to do a little research to get more familiar with how you should be training your new dog.
However you should keep an eye on your dog to make sure it does not display territorial behavior because becoming territorial is a bad thing for a Shar Pei.
Your Shar Pei rescue dog is a very social animal and it can easily be taught to peacefully interact with humans and other animals as well. All the Shar Pei needs is to know that you want it to become socially adept and it will take your lead. The only thing to keep in mind with a Shar Pei rescue dog is that there will probably be an initial mistrust of humans that can only be solved by patience and the proper training to help the dog trust people again.
It bears repeating that the Shar Pei is an extremely intelligent dog because it helps you understand how to train them better. A Shar Pei responds well to training but gets bored easily with some of the repetition involved in standard training. A rescue dog is going to require even more time to adjust so patience is needed on your part and you will also need to come up with some creative training that will get your point across and keep your dog listening at the same time.
You do not have to feel like you are alone when you are trying to deal with the issues raised by having a Shar Pei rescue dog. Always remember that your vet is an excellent source of information and advice whenever you need it and that you can call on your vet anytime they are open to get that advice.
You can also try to contact some of the local Shar Pei breeders and ask if they would be willing to offer you any advice or assistance as well. You never know how a breeder will react until you ask them and even then they may surprise you.
The Shar Pei is a very powerful and aggressive dog that can easily be trained to be a great family pet. But never forget that they are aggressive by nature and if they have been through a lot then sometimes they may revert back to what they know and that is protecting themselves through aggression. But over time you should be able to get through to your dog and once you do you will have a loyal pet for many years to come.

You have decided that you want a Shar Pei and now all you need to do is find yourself a list of Shar Pei breeders to choose from and you are on your way. Oh, you don’t know how to compile a list of Shar Pei breeders? Well believe it or not it is very easy to find breeders in your area.
If you are already a pet owner then you also have a vet and your vet can be a great source of information on finding a good breeder. If you do not have a vet yet then the best time to start talking to one is when you are in the process of finding a breeder. Your vet will give you valuable information that you can trust and that will point you in the direction of a breeder that you can feel comfortable doing business with.
If you have access to the Internet then you have an entire world of information at your fingertips and you can use that to find contact information for the various Shar Pei breeders in your area and if you are very lucky you may also find a lot more.
Sometimes Shar Pei breeders will host their own websites and a search of the Internet will help you uncover these sites and from them you can learn a lot about the breeders’ standards and how they run their business. The Internet can be a wealth of information.
You can also go through the listings of the various national breeder registries on the Internet to compile a list of reputable Shar Pei breeders as well. Registries set the standards that breeders follow so you can find the breeders that adhere to certain standards by browsing the list of registries on the Internet.
In the world of Shar Pei breeders sometimes the only way to get a hold of the breeders everyone considers to be the best are through referrals. You can ask any Shar Pei owning friends you have who their breeder is and if none of your friends have a Shar Pei then get on the Internet and make some new friends that do have Shar Peis. Shar Pei owner sites are all over the Internet and if you find any owners that are local they may be able to give you a referral to a quality breeder.
Finding the right Shar Pei breeder is extremely important and the more sources you use the more names you will compile and the better your chances of finding the breeder that suits you. Take your time and exhaust all of your options because in the end if you wind up dealing with a breeder that you were not completely sold on in the first place then you could regret it for years to come.

After a lot of discussion and a few family votes you have all decided that you want a Shar Pei as the new family pet. Now that you have made that decision it is time to start the most difficult and important process in the life of your pet. You need to compile a list of Shar Pei breeders to talk to.
The first thing you always want to find out is if a breeder is listed with any of the national breeder registries that you will find on the Internet. Ask the breeder what registry they are listed with and then confirm it for yourself.
If a breeder has chosen not to be affiliated with a national breeder registry then this may be something you want to question as registries set the breeding standards that good breeders use in their everyday business.
You can never underestimate the value of the information that your vet has to offer and there is no better time to talk to your vet, or start a conversation with one, than during the process of weeding out bad Shar Pei breeders. If your vet has a strongly negative opinion about any of the Shar Pei breeders you are considering then you may want to move on and consider other breeders. Your vet only wants to see you get the best pet you can so their advice is a great resource.
If the local law enforcement officials are familiar with some of the Shar Pei breeders you are considering then you may want to remove them from your list. A breeder may seem like a wonderful person when you talk to them but if you look into their past a little bit you may wind finding a person you do not want to deal with when it comes to something as important as the purchase of your pet.
You should utilize every resource at your disposal when considering Shar Pei breeders and one of the resources you can use is the Internet. If a breeder has an especially bad reputation then there may be warnings about them on the Internet that you can read and will save you a lot of time and hassle.
You would be surprised at who takes the time to post information on the Internet and also what information is available. You can save yourself some time and aggravation by just checking with the Internet first.
Searching for a breeder is an important search and your final decision is very important to your family and your future pet so take your time and utilize all of your resources before you make your final decision. You can save yourself a lot of time if you just use the information available to you to eliminate breeders that are not worth talking to.

The Shar Pei breed was made to be general farm dog with a wide range of purposes. They were not limited to just simple farming dogs.
This breed has a wonderful temperament and unlike their believed breed start the chow, they are great with kids. The Shar Pei have their origins in China and were bred specifically for the face, brains and strength, the blue Shar pei is a rare color so expect to pay more if you want one than you would for another color.
They were later used for things like fighting since the large amounts of excess skin and the prickly coat made it difficult for other dogs to keep a hold of. In 1973, the breed was introduced to the U.S. through a dog magazine, by a Hong Kong businessperson. It quickly grew in popularity and now has a registered foundation stock of more than 70,000 dogs.
Because of the breeds overwhelming popularity, it now has a registered foundation stock of over 70,000 animals. It is also recognized by the following organizations as a registered pure breed by the AKC, FCI, KCGB, CKC, UKC, NKC, ANKC, APRO, ACR and the NZKC. Each of these organizations has it’s own standards for the breed. However; all of them recognize the blue Shar Pei as a legitimate breed and color.
There is a need to keep them in very socialized environments and give them the proper training because the breed tends to turn overly aggressive and protective of its territory. Nevertheless, even with training and happy social environments, they will keep their guard dog tendencies, being suspicious of strangers or barking at them.
A blue Shar Pei is a rare color and so you should expect to pay more for this type of Shar Pei. They are beautiful animals and have a great temperament so they are good with children, unlike their possible ancestors the chow.
in the last few years before aggressive breeding and expansion measures of the breed was initiated in hopes to save the magnificent breed. Its popularity has expanded and registered in many of the known dog associations around the world, more than seventy thousand dogs in this foundation stock alone.
They also do well as an outside dog. However, if you keep a Shar Pei outside then be sure to provide shade and plenty of water as these animals are subject to having problems with the heat. It is also a good idea because of their size that you make sure the complex or homeowners’ association if you are living in an apartment or if you are living in a planned community approves of this size dog. These are wonderful dogs and make a great addition on any family.

Regardless of your age of your dog many Shar Pei problems can be solved with training. However, as with most unique breeds such as the Shar Pei there are a large number of medical problems that the dog may be subject to as well. It is these Shar Pei problems that are the hardest for the owner to deal with.
Special veterinary care is usually required and some of the skin conditions will require constant management by the pet owner.
It is most unlikely that you can train this tendency completely out of a particular dog. However, early training can provide you with tool to manage the dog in most normal human social situations.
Training should begin when the dog is a very young puppy with the goal of establishing you as the master of his or her kingdom. Once the Shar Pei is agitated, and they are not usually easily agitated, they are very difficult to subdue. In fact because of the powerful nature and their low center of gravity a fully-grown Shar Pei cannot be physically subdued. You will need to chemically intervene if your Shar Pei goes on the attack. Training will provide you with a way to avoid such a problem with your Shar Pei. T
This can become a serious concern as the Shar Pei can get severe medical conditions with its ears that require veterinary assistance and if the vet cannot approach the dog the dog can only be treated under sedation or anesthesia. Care problems such as these make the Shar Pei an expensive and high maintenance pet. Training early is important in developing a dog that will tolerate these kinds of activities in a more normal manner.
The history of the Shar Pei is most intriguing. Historically they were a member of the Chinese Royal Family with the purpose of guarding them and were trained and bred as fighting or guard dogs. With a very strong will and somewhat bullish temperament these dogs appear to be most suited to that role. Over time these dogs almost became extinct.
If you are lucky and get your puppy to train and develop tolerance to normal grooming needs then you can have a fine pet that will only provide you with concern when others are visiting your family or you are out walking the animal.
However, it is true that most happy pet owners obtained their animal as a puppy and maintain an effective dominance over their pet. They train them continuously and exercise them appropriately to keep them out of harms way. This is one pet that needs a truly committed dog owner and not a part-time pet lover.

If you know of a Shar Pei that is being abused or has been abandoned then you must contact a local Shar Pei rescue centre and get that dog the help it needs as soon as possible. All you need to do is make a phone call but many people do not because they do not know what to expect from a Shar Pei rescue centre.
That is what a Shar Pei rescue centre is for and that is who you should contact if you ever find yourself in that situation. Many time people do not know what to expect from a Shar Pei rescue centre so a quick rundown always helps.
Any good animal rescue organization is going to have a close relationship with the law enforcement officials in your area. Sometimes you never know what to expect from an animal abuser and having the law on your side is always a good idea. It can also help if law enforcement knows of a habitual animal abuser so that the animal rescue groups can keep an eye on them.
When an animal is rescued by a Shar Pei rescue centre more often than not it will need medical attention and that is why it is always a good idea to check and see what kind of vet services the centre has available to it. More than likely they are not going to have a vet on staff but they should have a vet available to them so that the rescued pets can get the medical attention they need. Always check to make sure the Shar Pei rescue centre you are talking to has a vet available to them.
No animal rescue group can effectively do their job on their own so you will find that the local Shar Pei rescue centre will have close ties to the other animal rescue groups in the area and they usually all work together. Sometimes a rescue centre does not have adoption services so they rely on other organizations to find new homes for these abused and abandoned pets.
You are going to find that most of the people that work in a Shar Pei rescue centre are volunteers so sometimes you will notice a small group of people doing a big job by themselves. That is the way it can sometimes be in an animal rescue centre and it is not an unusual sight to see.
The next time you see an animal rescue volunteer shake their hand and thank them for trying so very hard to make our world a better place.
Simply put no humane person should allow a pet to suffer in any way. You do not have to get involved but if you see a Shar Pei that is abused or abandoned then you must contact a Shar Pei rescue centre and get that dog the help it needs. Every pet deserves a chance at a good home and if all you need to do to give a Shar Pei a second chance is make one phone call then you should do that.

If you ever come across a situation where you know of an abused or abandoned Shar Pei then you need to contact the local Shar Pei rescue. Sometimes contacting the local Shar Pei rescue is not as easy as just opening up the phone book but there are other resources you can use to help you find the local Shar Pei rescue and get that little pet the help that it needs.
Sometimes local law enforcement makes it their responsibility to be a collection point for important local contact information. If you are looking for a Shar Pei rescue then you may want to ask local law enforcement what information they have that can help you get in touch with the right people. If they don’t have the necessary information they may be able to steer you towards an organization that does have the right information for you.
Your vet is a resource that is invaluable when it comes to the care of your pet and any other pet. There is a very good chance that your vet can give you the contact information you need for local Shar Pei rescue so that you can get that dog the help it needs right away. If you do not have a vet then just look up one in the phone book or take a walk over to the nearest one. Any vet would be glad to offer information that can lead to the rescue of an abused pet.
People sometimes forget that your local newspaper has been collecting important community contact information for generations and chances are very good that they also keep track of the local animal rescue groups as well. Sometimes they even publish the information on a weekly basis but even if they do not publish it you can still contact your local newspaper for animal rescue contact information so you can get that little dog the help it needs.
When people are doing a local search they often forget about the Internet because there is a belief that the web is only effective in broad national or international searches. The internet can be a great resource for finding your local Shar Pei rescue and you may even be able to find a website as well that can give you all of the information you need to get the help out to that little dog.
So always check the Internet when you are searching for anything because chances are it is on there.
Sometimes your search for a Shar Pei rescue group can be a national one on the Internet. Many national animal rescue groups have local offices that they can get you in touch with so you can get help out to the pets that need it.
Whatever you need to do you should do it because a pet deserves just as much of a chance at a good life as you do.
