How To Handle Shih Tzu Dogs

by Rebecca Simpson

Shih Tzu dogs are interesting dogs to own and before you invest in a Shih Tzu dog you may want to do a little research into their primary behaviors and characteristics. There is a lot that is unique to Shih Tzu dogs and some of it good while some of it is bad. But just like any other pet, if you really love your dog take the time to get to know your dog and its behavior and habits then you’ll both be much happier.

Shih Tzu dogs do not react well to loud noises, sudden noises, and a lot of commotion and rattling about. They are very high-strung dogs and one of their natural reactions to a lot of noise and commotion is an unpleasant biting response. For this reason you may want to talk it over with your breeder to decide if a Shih Tzu is a good dog to mix with your kids. It is better to find these things out before you bring the dog home especially if you discover that the Shih Tzu and your kids are not compatible.

Shih Tzu dogs descend from the dogs that were preferred by Chinese royalty and it seems that every generation since the original generation knows that and acts like it. They carry themselves very well, they are very dignified little dogs, but they are also playful and happy dogs when they feel comfortable and at ease. They do not require a lot of exercise but when they get going they certainly do love to play.

As far as noises go they do snore when they sleep so you may want to get your Shih Tzu used to sleeping in its own bed and they can also snort all day long. However they are not your typical toy breed of dog, as they are most certainly not a yippy dog.

They do not bark all day long and they do not carry on vocally at all unless they have a very good reason. They don’t make great watchdogs but they only speak when they really mean it.

A Shih Tzu dog is very much a dog with a mind of its own. They do not take to mindless commands like a more obedient breed of dog would and if they don’t want to chase the stick then they are not going to. They are very stubborn and this can be a problem when you are trying to show the dog who is in charge. This can also be a problem when it comes to housebreaking because they can sometimes take months to realize you want them to do their business outside.

Some people love Shih Tzu dogs because they require, and thrive on, a lot of attention. They need constant brushing for their long beautiful coat but mostly they just hate being left alone.

They also do not like being left alone for more than a few hours at a time so be sure you are going to be able to spend a lot of time with your Shih Tzu. If you keep this in mind then you will be able to really enjoy your dog.
